Communicating with your Web Designer
Once you decide you want a professional website and shortlist a web designer who suits your bill, the next step is the actual implementation of the website. This is one of the key areas where it is crucial to have proper communication between the web designer and the site owner. There are many categories of people who want to design a website - from the kinds who just know that a web site will help them improve their business, and who are perfectly willing to trust the web design company implement it, and the kind who knows exactly what they want, including the colour scheme and the layout. Most of the clients though fall in the category where they have a fairly good idea of the content and the links they want, but are not too sure about what they need as far the website design goes. This is one of the biggest stumbling blocks in achieving a well designed website. No matter how talented the web design company is, if you cannot communicate your requirements to them properly, or you do not have an idea of what you need, the company will not be able to use their talent to achieve your design. There is one point to be noted here - when we say 'communicate properly' it means how to translate the design ideas in your mind in terms the website designer understands.
One of the most logical solutions in such a situation would be to ask the client to point to them a few website that they have liked. While this seems like a very simple and practical solution, it is fraught with some professional hazards.
1 Most of the clients either do not have the time or it is not on their list of priorities to really spare some quality time to browse and check different websites in order to understand what they really want.
2 Apart from having 'a nice website', some clients just do not have an idea of what they want, and would like the web design company to come up with a few samples so that they can decide which one to opt for. Most of the clients fall in this category. This can prove to be irksome for the web designers as they have to work extra to come up with a few design options just so that the client gets an idea of what they want. Of course, this is an issue for budget websites, where the client is not willing to pay more for design options. This in turn dampens the enthusiasm of the web designer.
In short, if you really want 'a nice website', you should invest some time in it. The more sites you suggest to the web designing company, the more their artist understands your needs. One more fringe benefit is that when an artist senses that you are as interested in making a good website as he / she is, they will put in all their soul in their work.
